Joint Symposium on Cutting Edge Research for Smart Societies

Ruhr University Bochum and University of Tsukuba held a successful symposium at RUB on September 5, 2024

RUB Rector Paul and UT President Nagata emphasized the importance of academic cooperation between CiC universities for innovative research in important future fields and as a driving force behind the city partnership between Tsukuba and Bochum.

After a short video greeting from the Lord Mayor of the City of Bochum, Mr. Eiskirch, keynote speakers Prof. Hohn (RUB) and Prof. Suzuki (U Tsukuba) explained options, opportunities and challenges on the way to Smart Societies and Cities and the special role of information technology in this process. Then, nine lectures by professors Löschel, Taleb, Sasse, Marky and Walter (all RUB) as well as Fujii, Amagasa, Shikano and Akiyama (all UT) dealt with various aspects of digitalization, urban planning, artificial intelligence and quantum computer research, among others, from different perspectives.

Equally important were the subsequent bilateral cooperation talks of the guests from UT with professors from RUB in different working groups. In the following months, these discussions will be continued, online and through personal meetings.

RUB Vice-Rector Meschke and UT Vice-President Shigeta described the meeting as a great success and the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the two universities.
